Music The school music programme is in full swing in the coláiste. Audraí Ní Chearúil, Stephanie Holstead and Emma Bowles are responsible for the classical music programme. The second term of traditional music lessons has restarted under the guidance of Fergal Mac Amhlaoibh and other dedicated teachers. With Fergal's assistance the school has put together a comprehensive traditional music programme and classes in the following instruments violin, flute, concertina and bodhrán. Áine Ní Chatháin, well known sean-nós singer and musician from Dún Chaoin, is also giving sean-nós classes.

Orchestra and
Traditional Music Group
Two groups of musicians in the school have come together recently to start a school orchestra and traditional Irish music group.

Céilí


A school group from Callan, Co. Kilkenny visited the school on a Friday and Saturday night recently. This is an annual event and is part of their school's visit to the Gaeltacht. They played sports in Cúirt Bhoscó on Friday night and a céilí was held on Saturday night in Halla Muire. Thanks to their teachers, especially Dermot Rowan.

Seachtain na Gaeilge The school is preparing for the annual Seachtain na Gaeilge week which will be held from 10-17 March. The school aims to host a number of events during the week to highlight our linguistic and cultural heritage.

Debates

Sinéad Nic Giolla Phádraig, Eibhlín Nic Íomhair, Danielle Ní Chuarnáin and Eivlín Ní Lúing were successful in the most recent Gael-Linn sponsored school debate. The motion on the night was "Tá saibhreas na tíre á roinnt go cothrom" and our students were opposing. Buíochas lena múinteoir Gaeilge, Máire de hÓra.

Video Production Course

The video production course under the auspices of Comharchumann Forbartha Chorca Dhuibhne is now underway. The course, which gives students the opportunity to develop a script and film a short programme is given by Tomás Firtéar and Áine Uí Dhubhshláine.

Basketball

Practice and matches continue for first and second years under the watchful eye of Regina Ní Phrionbhail. First years are showing a marked improvement and were unlucky to get beaten by 2 points against Mounthawk, Tralee. On the same day Coláiste Íde second years had a comprehensive win over Mounthawk's second years.

Badminton





Brenda Barry from the Badminton Union of Ireland recently visited the school to discuss the development of that sport in the college. Following her visit the school organised a one day certificate course conducted by Ron Thompson from the Badminton Union. Second year girls thoroughly enjoyed the course, which was held on a Saturday.

The school also participated in the Kerry Schools Competition in Tralee. The following girls were selected to represent the school and although they were not successful they gave a good account of themselves and more importantly enjoyed the day.

Cross Country Running



Trials were held on the school sports field recently to select students for the Kerry Schools Cross Country Races which are held in the Demesne, Killarney each year. Ten girls were selected to represent Coláiste Íde and it being the school's first year in memory to participate in the event were nervous leaving the school. Happily all the girls gave a great account of themselves with both teams receiving second and third place in the Intermediate and Junior girls respectively. In addition three girls also received individual medals - Erica Ní Fhiceallaigh, second in the Intermediate Girls, Fionnuala Ní Mhurchú, fifth in the same event and Lauren Ní Choistealbha, fifth in the Minor race. Ciara Ní Ghabháin gave a good account of herself in the Junior race.

Karate

Much interest ahs been expressed in attending Karate classes and we are hoping to start these after the mid-term break if we can get a suitable time for the teacher Pádraig Casanova.

Billy O'Riordan Project

Funds were collected earlier in the school year by way of a bingo night and the proceeds donated to the Billy O'Riordan Project. At the Christmas concert a big raffle was held and the proceeds were accepted on behalf of the charity by Billy's mother, Mags O'Riordan. The college is grateful to all the businesses and individuals that provided spot prizes. Billy died tragically while on holidays in Malawai. A health clinic has been built in his memory in Malawai by his mother. Mags spent a number of years working in Coláiste Íde as a career guidance teacher.

Science Laboratory

The refurbishment work is now completed in the school science room and all classes are benefiting from the new facility. Thanks to all associated with the work and its timely completion.

Art Room

During the Christmas break the Art Room was relocated to a larger room in the building. The new room is more spacious and bright

Form and Fusion



Students participated again this year in The Form and Fusion art competition/exhibition in Cork. In this annual arts event students have to use old discarded materials. The event was a great outing and students would like to thank the teachers that travelled to Cork with them.

School Library

The school library is undergoing major development at the moment. The library is now located in the old Art Room along with the Career Guidance section.

Internet Conncetion

During the Christmas break the school put in place a computer network. All classrooms are now networked and have ISDN connections. Later in the year when the broadband connection is rolled out in all schools we will be in a position to avail of broadband in all classes.
